Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable tourism development meets the needs of present tourists
and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the
future. It is envisaged as leading to management of all resources in such
a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while
maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological
diversity, and life support systems.

Understanding Sustainable Tourism
Minnesota, like most destinations, is dependent on its natural and human
resources for tourism. Sustainable tourism values, preserves and protects
the natural and human resources while providing economic opportunity for
our communities and businesses. Sustainable tourism guidelines and management
practices are applicable to all types and sizes of tourism. Every community
and business can implement strategies for sustainability.
As a whole, the University of Minnesota has been actively engaged in
sustainability issues for several decades, including tourism. The Tourism
Center prepares and supports the tourism industry for success and sustainability.
