Cultural Heritage Tourism: Approaches for potentials

An attractive and emerging travel market are those engaged in nature-based or cultural and heritage based (Hargrove 2004; Hollinshead 1996; Luzar, Diagne, Gan, and Henning 1998; Nicholls, Vogt, and Jun 2004; TIA 2003). In fact, most (75%) U.S. adult travelers attended a cultural activity or event while on a trip in 2002. A variety of cultural activities are included in trips, but most often performing arts events (48%) and/or visit art museums or antique establishments (47%; The Historic/Cultural Traveler, 2003 edition.) In Minnesota, between 3% and 18% of travelers included such events in their 2005 itinerary (Davidson-Peterson, 2006). Cultural tourists are an appealing group as they typically stay longer and, subsequently, spend more money.
