Leisure and hospitality is a growth industry in Minnesota. It
employs over 230,000 Minnesotans, and is projected to add more
than 40,000 jobs between 2000 and 2010, a growth rate of 19.2%.
Minnesota tourism generates over $25 million in gross receipts/sales
per day. Every $1 invested in tourism marketing returns an estimated
$4.60 in new
state and local taxes, $20.40 in wages, and $53 in gross sales.
Although tourism impacts the success of our overall economy, it also ensures
our quality of life. It influences every business and affects almost every
aspect of our daily lives. This industry is wide-ranging: from obvious segments
such
as airlines, airports, rental cars, hotels, and travel agents to the countless
businesses found within our community, such as restaurants, museums, zoos,
parks, beaches, and amusement parks. From entry-level employees to top-level
executives,
tourism-related jobs in the United States can be found in numerous fields
that benefit all communities.
Tourism is vital to Minnesota. During National Tourism Week/See America
Week, May 7-15, the University of Minnesota Tourism Center is recognizing
the economic,
social and cultural value of tourism. Communities across the nation and in
Minnesota are planning events and activities celebrating the contributions
of travel and
tourism to our country.
The University’s Tourism Center will have a lunch and information session
Thursday, May 12, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rm. 110 of the St Paul Student
Center. University personnel involved with research and education on tourism
will be
available to discuss their work and this industry that generates $950 billion
in the world and $9.2 billion annually in Minnesota.
Please join us! RSVP to tourism@umn.edu by May 1 to ensure an adequate
lunch supply.
